Now, now. We'll have none of that abusive clapping here

Well, I've never heard anything so ridiculous.

In an attempt to reduce stress on players and to minimize abuse on young referees, the city of Port Coquitlam is implementing a ban on cheering, jeering, and clapping during minor lacrosse games.

They're testing it out on a series of four games. So far, they say think it's working. This article states: "[Head referee Craig] Labranche says one game has been played under the 'silent stands' rule, and it resulted in fewer penalties." Wow, that's some scientific study: in one out of one games without cheering fans, there have been fewer penalties.

Almost makes you feel like punching a reporter, doesn't it?

The article now says two games have been played, although it seems not to say whether the second resulted in fewer penalties as well.

Really, this seems like a "one-strike-you're-out-rule" is needed for parents and fans, rather than shutting the whole "fun" part down.

How about this: If you so much as boo the ref, you can be ejected. Do it twice, and you're out of the park for a month. Would that work?

Given that coaches also take some of the crap handed out by overactive sportsparents, maybe they should be included. It would help keep better quality coaches in the game and then perhaps Coquitlam could find one.

But to ban clapping and cheering?

In any case, I've also heard parents say "good call, ref" as well.

Most people don't hassle the young refs. It's the experienced refs at the upper levels that get flak--and only when they call a biased game. Most of us know that refs can't see everything that happens.

FWIW my kid says she can't even hear the parents' voices when she's playing.
