The past week in lacrosse

The first annual Seats for Soldiers was a resounding success. About 1500 people came out to Queen's Park Arena to watch the Senior Salmonbellies defeat (for the first time this season!) the Victoria Shamrocks. Soldiers, sailors, and military brass were out in great numbers, and we even had a marching band playing the national anthem. I got all teary-eyed, especially since July has seen a record number of soldiers killed in Afghanistan.

This past weekend, New Westminster and Burnaby co-hosted the provincial championship for girls' minor lacrosse. New Westminster did very well overall: gold in PeeWee; gold, silver, and bronze in Bantam; and silver and bronze in Midget. My daughter's team played their best game of the season in the bronze-medal match against Coquitlam. It was great to see them finally mesh as a team and apply all of the skills they'd learned throughout the season. It makes me wish the season were just a week or two longer...
