Not just for boys anymore
Here's a pretty good article from The Province on the
local girls' lacrosse scene. I especially like what they say about New Westminster:
Girls' lacrosse is especially strong in New Westminster, one of the few B.C. cities where kids live and breathe lacrosse.
Last year, the Salmonbellies won the girls' peewee and bantam provincial championships, while the midgets placed second. The New West teams were so strong that both the peewee and bantam finals were contested between Royal City teams.
The peewee girls also went undefeated in a "Super Series" tournament in Hamilton, Ont., beating Toronto 8-1 in the championship game.
On the weekend, New West hosted the ninth annual Dorothy Robertson girls tournament. More than 450 players and 25 teams played on the wooden floor at historic Queen's Park Arena.
By the way, if you're wondering about the outcome of
the game between this year's midget girls, our team lost by two points. The two teams meet again next week.

Important lacrosse game tonight for Midget girls
Tonight's the night that Midget 2 (my daughter's team) plays host to Midget 1 for the first time this season. Games between New West teams are always ultra-competitive. The New West girls' lacrosse league tries to balance the teams as much as possible. Even so, each team usually comes out at the top of league rankings.
This year, there was a bit of controversy surrounding the selection of the teams. At the start of the season, I would have said that Midget 1 was the stronger team on paper. The Midget 2 girls, however, have a heck of a lot of spunk, play a good, strong game, and have extremely high morale, despite the fact that several players are suffering from major injuries (but still manage to show up for most games and practices to support the team).
Tonight's outcome is anybody's guess, but I'm betting that this will be the best game they play all season, and that the girls from both teams will have a blast.

Photos from Coquitlam tournament
Here are some
great photos from the recent Coquitlam girls' tournament. Girls' box lacrosse, while not as rough as boys', is a completely different sport from
girls' field lacrosse.

The game
Playing Burnaby was not like I remember it. For years the girls team had a reputation for faking injuries. They seem to have outgrown that--at least at the Midget level.
Tonight's game was not as close as I expected it to be. The Bellies won 15-1. Burnaby certainly didn't play badly, but our girls' offense was outstanding. I'd never seen them pass so well before. Something has definitely clicked. My daughter had a great goal in her newly created fool-the-goalie style (I'm not going to give away her secret here) and AB made a wonderful shot behind her back. The other goals were strong as well--all 13 of them. What's most interesting, though, is the fact that we had seven players away tonight, six with injuries and one with a previous commitment, and had to call up four players from the bantam level--amazing that they fit in so well and even scored a few goals.

Finally, another game
Well, my daughter missed last weekend's tournament, so it seems like quite a while since I've seen her team play. Finally, we have a game tomorrow in Burnaby. It should be exciting. Burnaby's teams are always strong.

Now that's a lacrosse game!
Well, I have to admit that after watching my daughter's season opener on the weekend, I was a bit concerned by what the season might hold for us. The girls were sluggish, out of sync, and had to contend with a huge and talented goalie on the other team. Not that they can't overcome that and mesh as a team. But with the box lacrosse season so short, there's really not much time to spend meshing.
Tonight however, they played a great game--like they were a totally different team. They ran, they passed, and they made some incredible moves. The teamwork was phenomenal. The girls also spent a fair bit of time in the penalty box but, I'm pleased to say, not nearly as much time as the other team, who played most of the second period shorthanded.
The Salmonbellies kept a solid lead for the first and second periods, but Coquitlam picked up their game at the top of the third and almost caught up to the Bellies. After a well-timed time-out by the Bellies, though, the team regrouped and ended up winning 10 to 4. SS got a couple of hat tricks and CM got a hat trick as well. Well done, Midget girls.

Coming soon to an arena near you
Finally, box lacrosse is getting underway in New West. The wooden floor won't be installed for at least another week--April 29, to be exact. My daughter's team, midget girls, play their first game in Coquitlam on the weekend. It's going to be a busy couple of months. So far, I see at least 10 scheduling conflicts we have to work around. The season is much like the game itself: fast, unpredictable, and exhausting. Here's to a good one!

Minor girls' teams take two gold, three silver
Here's the update on the
provincial girls' championships in Nanaimo earlier this month. I had blogged about it at the time, but had some
technical difficulties and ended up restarting the blog. Girls' box lacrosse is really taking off in New West. Heck, we even have a women's team and a moms' drop-in session--the Mamabellies.
